Filip Scheperjans, MD, PhD, studied medicine at the University of Düsseldorf (Germany) and gained international experience as a visiting student in London, New York and Helsinki. Now living in Finland he works as attending neurologist and clinical researcher at the Department of Neurology at Helsinki University Hospital.

Currently, his main focus in on the role of microbiota in Parkinson’s disease and his group was the first to demonstrate microbiome community structure alterations in Parkinson’s disease. For his groundbreaking work in this field he was awarded the Uschi Tschabitscher Prize for Young Neurologists by the European Academy of Neurology in 2014. His work led to granted and pending patents related to the use of gut microbiota in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
